Introduction
So you think that having all the new and
high-tech gear is enough to have a what you call 'cool rig'. Well
certainly not for the geeks out there. They need to have a really
different case to fulfill their satisfaction and modifying is the only
solution.
Alright so you can buy a pre-modded case,
easy. But what if you already like what you have right now or don't
wnat to reinstall each bit of hardware you've got to a new case?
The answer....KITS. Lots and lots of kits. You've got window
kits neon light kits, rheobus kits, baybus kits, etc. But the first
thing that most case modder would do is the window kit mod. Today
we're gonna look at PCMod's window
kit and neon light kit kindly supplied to us by PC
Case Gear of Australia.
The Window Kits

What better way to show off those state
of the art hardware of yours but to put a see thru window in that case.
You've got a few designs to choose from: round, rectangular, oval and a
reverse L shaped window. Personally I like the rectangular
window kit and that's what we're gonna review.
The PCMods Rectangular
Window Kit
Dimensions: 11.125" (28.2cm) x 8.69" (22.1cm)
Made of cast perspex, the window is laser
cut for accuracy. Covered in paper backing, you are sure that it
will be in perfect condition free from scratches when it arrives to you.
The kit includes a pre-cut window molding with locking strip. It
also includes complete instructions for cutting the hole and installing
the window.
What's Included?
-
Pre-cut plexiglass window
-
rubber molding
-
rubber locking strip
-
Spacer/washer
-
Instruction sheet.
What Else Do You Need?
Before anything else, you need these tools
to be able to fit the window to the side panel of the case.
-
pencil/pen
-
jigsaw, nibbler, or dremel
-
drill
-
metal file
-
cutter
The Victim
The victim of course is none other than
my case. It's a full tower case bought locally, nothing fancy.
Yes, you can use any case, branded or not, as long as the window will fit
the side panel where you want it placed.

Installation
-
Using the washer, outline the shape of the
precut window to the detached case side panel.
-
Clamp the side panel to the workbench or if
you don't have one, ask a friend to hold it for you. Drill a hole
inside where your outline is to insert the nibbler, jigsaw, etc.
-
Start nibbling. We used a nibbler to
cut through the side panel.
-
Once you've removed the centerpiece, start
filing the edges to smoothen it and prevent accidental cuts while handling
the side panel.
-
Next is the installation of the rubber gasket.
Make sure you got the right side facing the right way. Narrow groove
against the metal, rounded side of the molding outside the metal side.
Start in the middle and end in the middle. Don't start in the corners.
-
After placing the rubber gasket, peel off
the plexiglass paper backing and start inserting it into the groove.
-
Once done with this, you need to lock the
plexiglass in place with the locking strip provided. Wide side facing
you. A pen is handy during this procedure.
-
Cut the excess strip and you've got yourself
a see through case!
But
Wait There's More....
