SIMPLIEST ALPHA PEP66 MOD FOR SOCKET A MOTHERBOARDS
by Ramil Tranquilino

Introduction
The Alpha PEP66 was originally made for Slot 1 motherboards that uses a socket cpu on a slocket.  This was designed by alpha so that some of the DIMM slots in the board would be freed.  Because of the huge heatsink they decided to reposition the fan so that it is not in the way of the dimm slots.

With the advent of socketed CPUs, motherboard manufacturers obviously would have to go the socket way as well.

Can I Use The Alpha PEP66....
For those who feels the need to upgrade to a new socket mobo, the PEP66 can be modified to fit the mobo correctly. Leufken made a howto about this just recently wherein he had the the fan positioned facing the socket/mobo like all socket HSF should be.

The Simpliest Mod
Now my modification involves just a simple reversal maneuvre and $5 but would bring your idle temp and full load temp by about 5-8C colder.  How?

What You Need
1. $5 to buy a generic high rpm fan
2. A Screwdriver

That's the only thing you need plus maybe a bit of technical skill, like using the screwdriver!  My PEP66 is attached to a 52w Peltier w/ a copper cold plate.  Yes, it is a Leufken kit.  It has been my reliable active cooler for about a year now.
