If your machine doesnt have it, providing you have the room in your case, you can get an adapter card. USB 2.0 has a peak speed of 480MB/sec while USB 3.0 has a peak speed of 5Gb/sec. Those numbers speak for themselves. In this case Vantec revised their SATA to USB 2.0 adapter that connects to the back of a drive.

Slow secondary storage has been the biggest persistent gripe about PC gaming for quite a while now. While CPUs, RAM, graphics cards and sys tem busses have all been improving at a steady rate hard drives have sta yed more or less stagnant for the past decade. Enter the solid state driv e. At its most basic level, a SSD has the same basic structure as a USB f lash drive: a bunch of NAND flash memory chips, a controller to tie them together, and an interface that talks to the outside world. Where a SSD p ulls ahead is, naturally enough, in the performance of those three compon ents. Today well be looking at the RealSSD C300 256GB SSD from Crucial. Taking advantage of the still-uncommon SATA 6.0 GBps interface, this driv e promises to deliver blisteringly fast performance.

One of the compliments I can bestow on this cooler, is that my son walked into the room and asked what was broken since it was so quiet in the room. Kind of an eye-opener once the white noise of high CFM fans used in air cooling are no longer there. Performance enhancements for the Tranquillo will be limited to adding a higher CFM fan to increase the cooling capacity of this cooler, since running a second fan on the back side is not supported due to its v-shaped design. But then you step away from the concept of the Tranquillo.

Many years ago, overclocking was not limited by Intel/AMD like nowadays. As it is usual, when they see they can make extra money from the consumers by limiting their features to those who pay more, they dont hesitate to take advantage of that. In the last years, the Intel made it a little bit impossible for those who want to buy a CPU with unlocked multiplier. Intel was limiting that feature to the Extreme Edition CPUs. AMD took this as an opportunity to approach consumers with a feature their competition wouldnt give and so the AMD Black Edition CPUs appeared. AMD has been kindly enough to offer Black Edition products for each segment in the market, and that means you can find a BE (Black Edition) CPU for less than $100. Intel is striking back with a pair of new processors which feature an unlocked multiplier without the $999 tag. Today, Benchmark Reviews will analyze the Intel Core i5 655K Unlocked CPU which basically is a Clarkdale based 2-cores/4-threads processor with Intel HD graphics and specially aimed at overclockers. Is the unlocked multiplier good enough to pay that little extra or isnt it worth it? Is it better to overclock with multiplier or should I to raise the BCLK? Those answers and more will be covered as Benchmark Reviews tests the Intel Core i5-655K Clarksdale processor, model BX80616I5655K.

As implied, this isnt their first PCI -E drive but it is the first that carries a price tag that rivals that of t he more traditional SATA port based SSDs. At an MSRP of $349 for the 120GB version (part number OCZSSDPX-1RVD0120), they arent what you would conside r inexpensive for storage devices in general, but considering the performan ce, hardware onboard and pricing of similar capacity SSDs, the price point is rather impressive. The RevoDrive features a pair of Sandforce SF-1200 co ntrollers in a RAID 0 configuration - all on one card. Think of it like the NVIDIA SLI and ATI Crossfire cards with dual GPUs on one card. You get al l the benefits of a traditional RAID 0 configuration without the hassle and expense of multiple drives and add-in RAID controller cards. The integrated fan controller is probably my favorite, though not completely necessary for the fans packaged with the Phantom as they already are silent at full speed.

NZXT first previewed the Phantom at Computex 2010 and then only as a little teaser to wet our appetites. The release date is now scheduled for early September at the latest and will be available in Black, White and Red with a suggested MSRP of $139 USD. Weve got the pre-release first look so there may be some minor tweaks before the case goes retail, but you can expect most of it to be the same. Lets dive in.

Why do we overclock? Its really a very simple question, but one that has found new meaning over the years. It used to be that computer hardware enthusiasts had very few options when it came to choosing a processor, and building your own custom system was simply not possible. This was back in the day when computers featured a Turbo button, overclocking from 33 to 66MHz was a click away. Back then, overclocking the CPU could push clock speeds past any production level. Today the market is different, and overclocking the processor could result in very little additional performance. With so many dual-, quad-, and hexa-core processors now sold on the open market, overclocking has transformed itself from a tool to help people work faster, into a hobby for enthusiasts. Enthusiast overclockers demand only the best performance from their computer hardware, which is why the aftermarket heatsink industry is thriving with fierce competition. Benchmark Reviews tests the latest Intel LGA1366 heatsinks in this Best CPU Cooler Performance Q2-2010 article.

With the NH-C12P SE14, Noctua has another quality cooler that lives up to their reputation of quiet operation thanks in part to the included 140mm NF-P14 fan. The SecuFirm2 mounting hardware remains one of the easiest to install among high end coolers and cooling performance is good. Full compatibility with all current AMD and Intel sockets mean that no matter what CPU you have, the NH-C12P SE14 has you covered. The C-type design of the NH-C12P SE14 should allow for a wide range of motherboard and case compatibility.

ASUS thought of the overclocker when manufacturing this card. Proof of this can be seen by the cards Probelt. The Probelt will allow the user to check GPU, Memory, and PCI-E voltage at anytime with a multimeter. The card is also equipped with ASUSs Super Hybrid Engine. The SHE should give us 54% better OC stability, as well as scoring 19% better then the average 5870. Not only that but ASUS included an Extreme Cooler, which should give us a 13% cooler card. ASUS even included a Real-time Hardware Loading Monitor

Also, because its so small, it should be ideal for quick and easy setup.

I remember being a young kid, taking that $5 red laser pointer wit h the different end caps to school. I would shine it on the white board a nd annoy the teacher, or even mess with pets while at home. I thought tha t it was bright, and that beam seemed to travel forever. I remember watch ing star wars and laughing at the fact that they could use light saber s to cut limbs like butter. There was no way that a laser could do tha t. I was wrong. Although not the most powerful laser produced by Wicked L asers, the Spyder II is a force to be reckoned with. The model we will ta ke a look at has an intense 300mw beam that can run constantly for up to 80 min. Is this just an over rated toy, or a truly awesome tactical laser ? Join us as we find out.

I got the Gorillatorch for review a while ago and Ive found it to be one of the most useful products Ive ever got for review. Joby has introduced another Gorillatorch though called the Gorillatorch Flare, that is similar to the original but offers a brighter beam with three levels of brightness and a strobe. In addition to the standard white light though included is a red light, thats kind of where the name flare comes from. The red light can be solid or strobe only. The Gorillatorch Flare has legs that are flexible to wrap around anything but it also has magnetic feet so it sticks to many surfaces giving it the ability to get light exactly where you need it.

The DC voltage load regulation was excellent and on a par with other power supplies in this class, but it did produce a disappointing set of results for AC noise/ripple. The Level 10 is a 53 pound aluminum chassis that combines a modular design along with a central pillar to create a case... that doesnt look like a case at all. In fact, it actually appears more a work of structural art rather than a means to house your computer hardware. Still, even with the exceptional look of the case only a select few will be able to take it off the showroom floor. This is due to the extremely high retail price of the Level 10 at $799 it costs as much as the highest-end graphics cards on the market.

QUOTE: System builders are at a crossroads of sorts when it comes time to choose a storage solution. Do you go for balls-to-the-wall performance and slap yo ur wallet silly by investing in a high performance solid state drive (SSD), or are you better off picking up a high capacity, yet slower performing ha rd drive for a fraction of the cost? There isnt a clear cut answer, but th anks to SilverStone, there might be an alternative. What if you could have both performance and capacity, and not have to spend a fortune to get them?

Sometimes when youre on the go, electric outlets are either impossible to find or rarely available. Moreover, its dreadfully incon venient to have to plug in when you could be moving, all because your pow er-hungry smartphone has a battery that lasts what seems like minutes. En ter mobile power packs, such as the Choiix Power Fort battery pack. It s a small black box which has two purposes: charge your small electronics and double as a flashlight. ThinkComputers has the review.

*The Choiix Power Fort affords the simplicity of a power source without needing the outlet. The Choiix Power Fort is a pocket sized charger that is able to charge any USB device at the same rate as the standard wall plug would provide, which can be up to 3 times as quickly as it would charge through standard USB. Perfect for the traveler, the wall plug can be switched out to fit many international standards and even include a car charger. So even in the busiest and mobile times in our lives, we can be assured that no matter what life throws at us, our devices will still be at arms reach and ready for action./

Well Nvidia has finally blessed us with its presence by entering the Direct X 11 Video Card race. The problem with the new Nvidia cards (as has been the case with most Nvidia cards recently) is the heat issues and all that heat needs to be dealt with somehow and the reference cooler used in the reference design is noisy, and it has to be in order to cope with al l the heat these GPUs put out. MSI saw a need and filled it with their new , not so reference designed cooler system: The Frozr II. This cooler professe s to be not only cooler then reference design but also considerably quieter.

Quote: The GPU block we are looking at today is from Aqua Computers aquagraFX series of water blocks. It is a full cover block that is CNC milled from a solid block of copper. The top and backing plates are made from stainle ss steel. This not only looks nice, but steel is lighter than copper and the inlet ports are also made from Delrin plastic, which is even lighter yet. Overall the aquagraFX water block weighs in at 850g that is 350g li ghter than the 1.2kg Danger Den full copper block we recently looked at. The lighter weight will mean less stress on the card and a lesser chance of snapping something that shouldnt, but can it keep the GF100 Fermi core as cool?

Quote: The Prolimatech Super Mega certainly exceeded my expectations after taking a close look at it and handling it for a while, but I did find the lack of real copper fins a little disheartening, as Prolimatech markets it in a way that would make it seem that they should be solid copper. I suspected this by looking at the color of them, which was a bit of an orange tint and seemed a little unusual for the way copper typically looks. The design, while aesthetically pleasing, is anything but your typical HTPC keyboard design. Needless to say, I was skeptical. It was a few months ago that we reviewed the MSI 890GXM-G65 micro-ATX AM3 motherboard, and while the 890GX was the first of AMDs newest chipsets to be released this year, it was far from the last. The latest to join the 800-series lineup are the 880G and 870 mainstream boards, as well as the flagship 890FX. MSIs implementation of the 890FX chipset offers many of the same features that the 890GXM does, such as their Heatpipe Thermal Design, Military Class Components, OC Genie Technology, 140W CPU Support and Active Phase Switching for better power efficiency. Even so, theyve reserved a few special features just for their flagship model, like DrMOS for superior power handling capability, improved Military Class Components, Unlock CPU Core support, Real Time OC Dial and Winki, a Linux-based instant-on OS.

When I used the available tools to overclock this card, I was able to pull another 106MHz from the core/shader clocks and another 56MHz on the GDDR5 memory for increased bandwidth. Each of these clock speed bumps netted measurable performance increases across the tested games. Something well worth the effort and time.

If youve been holding out for AMDs latest chipset and its 42 lovely lanes of aggregate PCI Express 2.0 bandwidth, this may just be the budget-oriented motherboard youve been searching for. Meet the Biostar TA890FXE motherboard, an AMD 890FX platform that eschews tons of frilly extras for a core feature set and competitive sticker price. Naturally overclocking friendly, Biostar have added core unlocking into the BIOS on this board so up to five cores may be unlocked from certain AMD triple or quad-core CPU models. The usual overclocking caveats apply in full force, or course, but if you do your research and pick up the right chip, this motherboard has the tools to enable you to unlock all working cores. About the only feature the Biostar TA890FXE motherboard skimps on is USB 3.0 - it just doesnt have it.

There are many products available to aleviate this issue, but today were looking at one from Nexus.

Therefore, I had high expectations when the Fortress arrived here in the Tweaknews lab. To say that I was impressed with this chassis would be a bit of an understatement. With top-of-the-line cooling performance, a rich and innovative feature set, great looks and a roomy and convenient interior, this is easily one of the best chassis Ive had the pleasure to review.

Quote: If you are looking for a cheap upgrade to your system that is going to give you the latest in mainstream DirectX 11 cards, you are going to be looking at getting either an HD 5670 or HD 5550 and Sapphire has a great lineup when it comes to either of these models with their HD 5670 Ultimate and the HD 5550 OC. For the $20 difference between the two cards, I would put my money on the HD 5670 Ultimate, not only are you going to get better performance and a faster card, you are also going to be getting a few included accessories and a much higher overclocking headroom.

There has been a trend lately of no maintenance liquid cooling solutions. These systems take the guesswork and complicated component selection out of the equation and bring simplicity and great performance to the table. Lets investigate how the CoolIT ECO A.L.C. performs as compared to a big, heavy air cooler.
2010-07-13 04:48:56
*The CoolIt ECO A.L.C. brings many of the advantages of liquid cooling to the mainstream user without breaking the bank at a mere $69.99. The CoolIt ECO is a solid CPU cooling solution and allows the user to unclutter the case to increase airflow, all while remaining self contained and very easy to install. The two major foreboding aspects of liquid cooling, price and complicated install and maintenance, are not a worry with the CoolIt ECO. The CoolIt ECO is comprised of two main components, a pump with the contact block and a 120mm fan/radiator assembly. The pump is as easy to install as any air cooler, needing only four thumbscrews to secure it in place. The fan/radiator assembly installs in exactly the same manner as a standard case fan./

After using both the GeForce GTX 460 768MB and GeForce GTX 460 1GB the GeForce GTX 460 1GB is clearly the way to go for gamers. With most gamers running 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 resolutions the extra memory and incr eased bus speed is well worth the extra $30 MSRP. The GeForce GTX 460 1GB i s also faster, cooler and less power hungry than the GeForce GTX 465 in our testing. This makes it the card of choice for anyone looking for an NVIDIA card under $300. After looking back at the benchmark performance numbers, we wouldnt understand why anyone would want the GeForce GTX 465 over the G eForce GTX 460 from the gaming perspective...

So Ive had my time with the Droid X, about a week and a half to play with i t, and Ive come away with several thoughts on it, and the majority of them are very good. The Droid X is a big phone, theres not doubt about that, but big is nice sometimes, and for this phone, big is the way to go. The Droid X ha s a big beautiful screen that just makes doing everything that much more enjoyable. The phone itself is very responsive, its fast, never once did it slow down no matter what I did. I generally dont think of phones as gami ng platform really, but the Droid X does games, and it does them very well, that large screen is just great for gaming truly. The Droid X is one of the nicest phones Ive ever had a chance to review.

SNIP: Nvidia went a little different on these GPUs and both models have 336 Shaders but they have subtle differences in design. The 1GB model has a wider memory bus at 256 bit and the 768MB card has 192 bit memory bus. Having two GTX-460s is a little confusing so we will be referring to them as the GTX-460 768 and GTX-460 1GB. The GTX-460 1GB has 32 ROPs and the 768MB model has 24 ROPs. SO our major differences on the two card are the 1GB card has 256MB more memory, 8 more ROPs and 64bit more memory bus. The projected prices on the cards are $199 for the 768MB model and $229 for the 1GB model.

The NotePal U2 comes equipped with a pair of 80mm low profile fans measuring only 10mm thick. They also have a grill on the intake side to prevent injury from the fan blades. The unique advantage this unit has over many competitors is the ability to move the fans to a more advantageous position like under an inlet vent or where a hot hard drive sits. Worth considering is that many notebook manufacturers pay little to the cooling of the hard drive which can significantly shorten its lifespan. The ability to cool this area of the notebook could increase its life.

Despite the availability of a small business edition, Backup Exec doesnt really shine as a small business product, especially when compared against alternatives specifically aimed at the SME which are both easier and simpler to use. Higher up the food chain the Symantec software has a lot more going for it and in a large enterprise the ability to spread backup processing across multiple systems and only buy the options actually required are real selling points. That said, CAs ARCserve is just as effective and comes with deduplication as standard. USB 2.0 is most popular due to wide compatibility but transfer speeds are slow in todays standard. Other options like FireWire, eSATA and the recently introduced USB 3.0 offer much more bandwidth but of course many computers dont support these various interfaces. Until now, the tradeoff has been speed versus compatibility. But with Seagates new FreeAgent GoFlex portable hard drive, you can get the best of both worlds. The GoFlex drive ships with a standard USB 2.0 interface but what makes this drive unique is the ability to remove the interface and replace it with a complete different interface.

The progress made in the design and implementation of CPU coolers over the last few years has been little short of amazing. While both Intel and AMD provide perfectly adequate coolers with their boxed retail CPUs, enthusiasts will want to consider a third-party CPU cooler for their rigs from both performance and styling standpoints. Overclocking your CPU mandates something better than the stock cooler, and if youve a windowed case, looks dont hurt either. Cooler Master was founded to produce advanced cooling products, and in this review Benchmark Reviews looks at the latest in their line of V coolers, the Cooler Master V6GT (model RR-V6GT-22PK-R1).

Quote: The ShockWave SU-201s were less than impressive and a letdown. The sound quality was only marginally better than what comes with my laptop, and they require power provided by the USB port while a second TRS connection is needed for the audio. The layout of speakers is also disappointing due to the location of the volume control dial. As the volume is increased on the SU-201s, distortion takes over and whatever you are listening to becomes nothing more than a muddy mess.

Antec really has not really introduced anything super ground br eaking in a long time. I mean they did start their gaming case line with the 900 case and some other cases followed, but they have had the same st yle cases for quite some time. This year at CES I was extremely excited w hen I saw a set of cases that looked nothing like that Antec cases of the past and finally brought them up to date internally. The cases Im tal king about are the Dark Fleet series. This new series has 3 cases, 2 mid towers and 1 full tower. Today we will be looking at the full tower, the DF-85. This case features so many features we cant list them all here! So go ahead and read on as we check out the Dark Fleet DF-85!

The Samsung SyncMaster PX2370 is a 23-inch widescreen LCD monitor that offers excellent image quality with many features and a stylish design. The slimness alone of the screen is enough to catch the eye of a potential buyer. Budget buyers looking for a larger-sized screen will like the PX2370 because its priced very competitively compared to other 23-inch displays.

Quote: USB 3.0 is all the rage, its the new in-thing, so as with USB 2.0 we ve got accessories for it. One such accessory is the often overlooked USB hub, on USB 2.0 theyre like as dime a dozen, but with USB3 things have gone u p in price. On motherboards and add-in cards, youre usually limited to onl y one of two USB 3.0 ports as of now, so if you need more youll need a hub obviously. Today for review Ive got a very well made four port USB hub f rom Siig, yeah its USB hub, not much exciting, but it is one of the nicest h ubs Ive seen and it works great.

SNIP: With the introduction of the GF100 core (Fermi) weve been seeing cut down variants appearing slowly. First we saw the mighty GTX-480 and were a little set back when instead of 512 Shaders (Cuda Cores) we were told it had 512 Shaders but only 480 were exposed. Then we saw the GTX-470 Variant and it has 448 Shaders. The drop from 480 Shaders to 448 Shaders made it an attractive, more moderately priced variant that offers most of the power of the GTX-480 at a substantially reduced price. Figure GTX-480 runs right at $500 and GTX-470 runs $350 you lose 32 Shader units but save $150 at little cost to performance.

As well as addressing the many shortcomings of the ageing 2007 product, SharePoint 2010 equips the platform well to cope with new technologies and the ever changing IT landscape. Alternatives may have started to overtake it, but the new release more than restores the balance in Microsofts favour. For new customers and those looking to develop or enhance existing applications its a natural choice, although those happy with what theyve got might want to postpone upgrading until they have a real need for the new features. Either way, SharePoint 2010 makes even more sense than ever and should be one of the first platforms considered for any Web collaboration project.

Theres no question that GRUB 2 brought on numerous improvements over earlier versions, but it also introduced a small downside... a relative overhaul to how things are done. There are no more menu.1st (or similar) files that keep a simple configuration, nor are all of the commands the exact same at the command-line. You might have been an expert with GRUB 0.x, but youll still face a small learning-curve with GRUB 2.
